PEDIATRIC HIV-POSITIVE AND AIDS CASES.

"Pediatric AIDS in the United States affects two age groups:"

"1.Infants and young children who became infected through prenatal (vertical) transmission. "

"2. School age children, the majority of whom acquired HIV through blood transfusions (mostly hemophiliacs) "

"Ending 2005, about 9600 pediatric AIDS cases were reported and about 5280 (55%) have died from AIDS. Pediatric AIDS cases represent about 1% of the total number of AIDS cases to date."

"It is estimated that for each pediatric AIDS case reported, there are three to four other HIV-infected children. ."

"Thus, an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 children in the U.S. have HIV. ."

"Of the pediatric AIDS cases, 3% were/are hemophilic transfusions or blood products (pooled and concentrated blood factor VIII injections). ."

"About 5% pf pediatric AIDS cases occurred in non-hemophilic children who were transfused with HIV-contaminated blood. From 1995 on.."

"Virtually all HIV-infected newborns contracted HIV vertically. The Pediatric AIDS Foundation reported in April 1995 hospital costs for each HIV-infected newborn were $35,000 per year. ."

"Worldwide beginning year 2005, about 3.5 million children will be living with HIV disease and about 6 million will have died from AIDS.."
